Cold War Creatures or the Atomic Age & great responsibilities.

Above- What happens when you forget to pay your electric bill. I told them it would be just a couple of more days. No patience nowadays.

The Atomic Age, aside from the aftermath of WWII and the dropping of two atom bombs over Japan was supposed to be a promising era of incredible scientific advances. In a positive light. Space travel, supersonic speed, nuclear energy (supposedly safe and inexpensive-neither were true. We would learn that the hard way- in much later years). We got lounge music and jazz. Concept cars, with the hint that they fly someday like the Jetson’s cartoon. Washers -dryers, food enhancements and food synthesizers (Star Trek). TV Dinners and more. Look, Batman had an atomic powered car and nuclear reactor in the Batcave (according to Batman ‘66).

Above- We practiced this in a drill a few times during the school year. Talik about slightly unnerving. It became a part of our culture.

The ‘50s- in the early days gave way to another era overlapping the Atomic Age and all its splendor. A Cold War. A build up in nuclear weapons by both the US and Russia. So, you had these two concepts raging at the same time. One, for the benefit of “mankind” and the other threatening WWIII at any moment. The tension regarding the later was like a pot near ready to boil over. In schools we practiced ‘Duck n Cover” where an alarm would sound in and through-out schools across America and kids would put their heads down on their desks or between…
